LGBTQIA+ / Queer-Affirming Support
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we are deeply committed to creating a safe, affirming, and empowering space for LGBTQIA+ and queer-identifying individuals. We recognize that navigating the world as a queer person can involve unique challenges—whether you're exploring your identity, facing rejection, dealing with internalized shame, or simply wanting to be seen and understood without having to explain yourself.
Our therapists are queer-affirming, culturally responsive, and experienced in supporting clients through a wide range of experiences related to gender, sexuality, and identity. We welcome you as you are—with respect, care, and curiosity. Whether you're questioning, coming out, transitioning, healing from trauma, or simply looking for a therapist who gets it, we’re here to walk alongside you.
This is a space where your full self is not only welcome, but celebrated.
Trans, Nonbinary & Gender-Expansive Support
We honor and affirm the full spectrum of gender diversity. Our therapists are experienced in supporting trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, and gender-expansive individuals through exploration, transition, healing, and affirmation. Whether you’re navigating dysphoria, systemic discrimination, coming out, social/medical transition, or simply seeking a space to be fully seen—we’re here to support you without pathologizing or assumptions.
We also provide Letters for gender-affirming care.
Depression
Depression can feel like a heavy fog—making it hard to connect, feel joy, or even get through the day. You might be exhausted, overwhelmed, disconnected from yourself or others, or simply tired of pretending you're okay.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we approach depression with empathy, not judgment. Our therapists create a space where you can talk openly about what you're experiencing—whether it’s sadness, numbness, shame, or hopelessness. Together, we’ll explore the roots of your pain, identify patterns that may be keeping you stuck, and help you reconnect to your sense of self, meaning, and possibility.
We draw from psychodynamic and relational therapy approaches, which means we look at how your past experiences and relationships may be shaping how you feel and relate to others today. Through a trusting, consistent therapeutic relationship, we work with you to uncover unconscious patterns, build self-awareness, and create space for emotional growth and lasting change.
Anxiety
Anxiety can show up in many ways—racing thoughts, constant worry, difficulty sleeping, tension in your body, or a feeling that something is always just out of your control. It can be exhausting to live in a state of hyper-awareness or to feel like you're never quite safe, even when everything looks “fine” on the outside.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where your anxiety can be understood with compassion. We don’t just focus on managing symptoms—we’re interested in understanding where your anxiety comes from, what it might be protecting you from, and how it has shaped your relationships and sense of self.
Using psychodynamic and relational therapy approaches, we explore how your early experiences, attachment patterns, and unconscious beliefs may be fueling your anxiety today. Through a consistent and attuned therapeutic relationship, we help you build insight, foster emotional regulation, and cultivate a deeper sense of safety within yourself and in the world.
The Intersection of Anxiety & Identity
For many queer, trans, and other marginalized folks, anxiety is not just personal—it’s relational and systemic. Living in a world where your identity is misunderstood, stigmatized, or erased can lead to chronic stress, hypervigilance, and feelings of isolation. You may find yourself questioning your safety in spaces where others feel at ease, or carrying the weight of needing to “perform” in order to be accepted.
We understand how anxiety can be shaped by the experience of moving through systems that weren’t built with you in mind. At Luminations, we hold space for the complexities of your identity and the emotional toll of marginalization. Our work is grounded in affirming who you are—not in spite of your anxiety, but with deep respect for the context in which it developed.
Trauma & PTSD
Trauma isn’t just something that happened in the past—it lives in the body, in your nervous system, in the ways you relate to others and to yourself. You might feel stuck in cycles of fear, shame, or numbness. You might struggle with trust, boundaries, or intense emotional swings. Sometimes, the world feels unsafe even when you're doing your best to keep moving forward.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we understand trauma as more than a diagnosis—it’s a lived experience that impacts your whole being. We create a safe, attuned space where your story can unfold at your pace. Whether you're dealing with the aftermath of a single event or the cumulative impact of developmental, relational, or systemic trauma, you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Using psychodynamic and relational therapy, we gently explore how past wounds and survival strategies are showing up in your present-day relationships, emotions, and sense of self. We focus on building trust and safety within the therapeutic relationship—because healing begins when you feel truly seen, not pathologized. Through insight, connection, and emotional processing, we help you move toward integration and post-traumatic growth.
Trauma & Identity
For queer, trans, BIPOC, and other marginalized folks, trauma is often layered—not only personal, but also cultural, generational, and systemic. Experiences of rejection, erasure, violence, or chronic invalidation can leave deep imprints, even if they aren’t always named as "trauma." These wounds can show up in ways that are misdiagnosed, minimized, or misunderstood in traditional mental health spaces.
At Luminations, we recognize how trauma and identity intersect. We approach healing through an affirming, anti-oppressive lens that honors your lived experience. We understand the toll of having to navigate spaces that weren’t built to hold your complexity. Here, you don’t have to explain who you are or why it matters. Your healing gets to center you—your truth, your pace, your wholeness.
Life Transitions Therapy
Change is a natural part of life—but even positive transitions can bring uncertainty, grief, or emotional overwhelm. Whether you’re navigating a breakup, career shift, coming out, parenthood, relocation, or the end of a chapter that once felt stable, transitions can stir up deep questions about who you are and where you’re headed.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we hold space for the messy, nonlinear process of change. Life transitions often reactivate old patterns or unresolved wounds—feelings of abandonment, imposter syndrome, self-doubt, or fear of the unknown. You might find yourself questioning everything or struggling to trust your own decisions.
Using psychodynamic and relational therapy approaches, we explore how your past shapes the way you move through change in the present. Through a grounded, attuned relationship with your therapist, you can process complex emotions, deepen your self-understanding, and reconnect with your inner compass. Transitions can be hard—but they’re also moments of possibility and transformation.
The Impact of Identity on Life Transitions
For LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized individuals, life transitions often carry additional layers of complexity. Coming out, transitioning, starting or ending relationships, aging, or navigating chosen family structures may involve loss, fear, or facing societal expectations that don’t reflect your truth.
At Luminations, we understand that your identity shapes how you experience change—and how the world responds to that change. We approach transitions through an affirming, anti-oppressive lens, creating space for all the parts of you to be seen and supported. Whether you’re forging a new path or grieving an old one, we walk with you through the uncertainty, honoring your growth, your resilience, and your right to move forward on your own terms.
ADHD
ADHD is so much more than trouble focusing or staying organized. It can affect how you relate to time, structure, emotions, and even your sense of self. You may struggle with self-criticism, shame, overwhelm, or the pressure to “just try harder”—even though you’re already trying so hard.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we view ADHD not as a personal failure, but as a neurodivergent way of moving through the world that deserves understanding and support. Many people with ADHD are carrying years of internalized messages that they are too much, not enough, or simply “bad” at life. Therapy can be a place to unlearn those beliefs and reconnect with your strengths, needs, and identity.
Using psychodynamic and relational therapy, we help you explore how ADHD has shaped your emotional world, relationships, and self-worth—especially if it went unrecognized for much of your life. We offer a space where you can slow down, be fully yourself, and begin to understand your patterns with compassion instead of judgment. Together, we’ll work on building insight, emotional regulation, and sustainable practices that support your unique brain.
ADHD & Identity
For queer, trans, BIPOC, and other marginalized folks, ADHD is often overlooked, misdiagnosed, or misunderstood. You may have been praised for masking or punished for struggling—leaving you without the support you needed. If you’re neurodivergent and navigating the impact of systemic oppression or cultural stigma, it can feel like you’re constantly trying to translate yourself to others.
At Luminations, we offer ADHD support through an affirming, identity-conscious lens. We honor how your neurodivergence intersects with your lived experience and help you untangle internalized shame from who you truly are. Therapy is not about fixing you—it’s about understanding you. You don’t have to shrink or hustle for belonging here. This is a space to show up as your full, beautifully complex self.
Queer Family Planning Support
Building a family as a queer person or couple is a profoundly meaningful—and often deeply complex—experience. Whether you're considering pregnancy, adoption, surrogacy, co-parenting, or crafting a chosen family, the process can bring up a wide range of emotions: excitement, grief, longing, fear, and hope—all at once.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we offer affirming support for LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples navigating the emotional terrain of family planning. You might be facing medical, legal, or logistical hurdles that others never have to think about. Or perhaps you’re grieving the family structures you didn’t grow up with while trying to create something new. These aren’t just practical challenges—they’re relational and deeply personal.
Using psychodynamic and relational therapy, we help you explore how your early experiences of family, identity, and belonging shape your hopes and fears around becoming a parent, being a partner, or creating a support system that feels real and rooted. We hold space for the emotional complexity of this process, including loss, uncertainty, and the vulnerability of wanting something so important.
Identity, Belonging & Systemic Barriers
For queer, trans, and nontraditional families, the path to parenthood often includes navigating institutions that weren’t built with us in mind. It can be exhausting to constantly advocate for your legitimacy, explain your relationship structure, or confront the emotional toll of feeling unseen or excluded. The longing to become a parent is beautiful—and it shouldn’t come at the cost of your dignity.
At Luminations, we provide support that is not only queer-affirming but identity-conscious and trauma-informed. Whether you're deciding what family means to you, navigating fertility options, or facing difficult decisions, we’re here to help you feel grounded, empowered, and emotionally held as you move forward.
Queer Perinatal & Postnatal Support
The journey into parenthood is a profound transition—filled with joy, hope, and often unexpected challenges. For queer and trans parents, the perinatal and postnatal periods can also involve navigating unique emotional, relational, and societal complexities that are rarely addressed in traditional care settings.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we offer affirming, compassionate support tailored to the specific needs of LGBTQIA+ parents during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Whether you’re experiencing anxiety, depression, identity shifts, or changes in your relationship dynamics, we hold space for all your feelings—without judgment or assumptions.
Using psychodynamic and relational therapy approaches, we explore how your past experiences, attachment history, and relational patterns influence your current transition to parenthood. We work collaboratively to help you build resilience, strengthen connections, and honor the complexity of your unique family story.
Identity & Systemic Challenges
Queer, trans, and nontraditional parents often face additional layers of stress, including medical gatekeeping, social invisibility, and cultural misunderstanding. These systemic challenges can compound the natural difficulties of the perinatal period, impacting mental health and wellbeing.
At Luminations, we recognize how your identity intersects with these experiences. Our approach is trauma-informed, identity-affirming, and culturally responsive—creating a space where you can fully express yourself, grieve losses, and celebrate your journey as a parent on your own terms.
Queer Perimenopause & Postmenopause Support
Perimenopause and postmenopause bring profound physical, emotional, and relational changes—shifts that can feel both challenging and transformative. For queer and trans individuals, these life phases often come with unique experiences that are rarely discussed or acknowledged in mainstream healthcare or society.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we provide compassionate, affirming support tailored to the needs of LGBTQIA+ people navigating perimenopause and postmenopause. Whether you’re facing mood changes, identity shifts, relationship transitions, or questions about your evolving body, we offer a safe space to explore and process these complex experiences.
Using psychodynamic and relational therapy, we help you understand how past experiences and current relationships influence how you navigate this stage of life. Through a supportive therapeutic relationship, we work with you to foster resilience, self-acceptance, and emotional wellbeing as you move through this transition.
Identity & Systemic Considerations
Queer, trans, and nonbinary individuals may encounter additional challenges during perimenopause and postmenopause, including medical misunderstandings, erasure, and societal invisibility. These systemic barriers can deepen feelings of isolation or dysphoria during a time of significant change.
At Luminations, we approach this work through an identity-affirming and trauma-informed lens, honoring your whole self and the specific ways your identity shapes your experience. Our goal is to create a space where you can feel seen, supported, and empowered to embrace this chapter on your own terms.
Kink & Polyamory Support
Exploring or living within kink and polyamorous relationships can be deeply fulfilling but also complex. These relationship styles often challenge mainstream norms and may come with unique emotional, relational, and societal dynamics that aren’t always understood or accepted.
At Luminations Psychotherapy, we provide a nonjudgmental, affirming space where kink-identified and polyamorous individuals and couples can explore their experiences safely. Whether you’re navigating communication, boundaries, jealousy, identity, or the challenges of living authentically in a world that often misunderstands you, we’re here to support your journey.
Through psychodynamic and relational therapy, we help you uncover how past relationship patterns and internal narratives influence your current connections. By fostering awareness and emotional insight within a trusting therapeutic relationship, we work with you to build healthier, more satisfying relationships and greater self-acceptance.
Identity & Systemic Context
Kink and polyamory intersect with identity in important ways and can be further complicated by societal stigma, misunderstanding, and marginalization. People in these communities often face judgment, invisibility, or internalized shame—both within and outside queer spaces.
At Luminations, we approach kink and poly support through an affirming, trauma-informed lens that honors your full self. We recognize the resilience it takes to live authentically and offer therapy that validates your experiences while helping you navigate the challenges and joys of non-normative relationships.
Teens:
Support for LGBTQIA+ Teens & Young Adults
Adolescence is already a time of profound change—and for LGBTQIA+ youth, it can be even more complex. We provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where queer and questioning teens can explore identity, navigate social and family dynamics, and build confidence in who they are. We help young people process anxiety, depression, isolation, and trauma while fostering resilience and self-acceptance.
We also support families in affirming and understanding their LGBTQIA+ youth, if and when that’s desired.
Couples:
Queer Couples Therapy
We offer affirming support for LGBTQIA+ and queer couples of all relationship styles and identities. Whether you’re navigating communication challenges, negotiating boundaries, repairing trust, or building intimacy, we hold space for the complexity and richness of queer love. Our approach honors the unique ways queer relationships are shaped by identity, culture, and systemic pressures—while centering connection, safety, and growth.
We also support polyamorous and non-monogamous relationships, and we’re sex-positive and kink-aware.
